# How To Create Illusion Of Volume And Reality
In this unit, we will study the theory behind a painting. We will cover all the mechanics that will allow us to create the illusion of reality through our paintings. I will explain the definition of painting and why any aspiring painter needs to have a proper understanding of drawing, values, and lighting.
## What Does Painting Mean?
To me, it is about translating volumes, light and colors into a flat 2D suface.
### The 4 Pillars of Visual Arts
1. Drawing (translating 3D Reality To A 2D Illusion)
2. Painting (translating volumes, but with painting we also translate light and color)
3. Design (creation of shapes)
4. Compostion/Narrative
### Painting
Translating volumes, light and colors into a flat illusion of shades.
**Shades:** Different tones of grays
**Colors:** Different tones of colors
When we paint an environment, we understand the **volumes**, we understand what are the **shapes** we are painting. Then we are gonna use **shades of values** (darks, medium tones, clear tones, bright tones), and we'll use **different colors** also. And the understanding of how to combine them in a meaningful way will give us the ability to translate reality into a flat illusion.
Just by the **juxtapostion** of different shades, we will be able to create the illusion that there is actually volume within the image we are creating.
To do this translation, we have to focus on three steps to learn how to draw and how to paint:
1. Observation
2. Techniques
3. Practice
### Observation
Look things in detail, how color works, how light works, how shadows are spread apart. It's really the basis of painting to start and observe in a different manner.
### Techniques
How painting works on a technical level, how to ues a brush, how to combine colors, how to create volume. All of these **how to's** we are gonna explore and explain them.
### Practice
We are gonna have to practice, we are gonna be a life long student because paiting is something that can never be mastered. You learn through practice and repetition.
In this course we are gonna be learning three main things:
1. Simulate Volume (with just a little amount of tones and shades)
2. Mimic Light (simulate the volumes with light, just by, once again, juxtaposing different tones one next to another)
3. Translate colors and Sensations (which is something really hard to handle, but which is we can really understand through practice observation and techniques)
Painting is not a direct translation of reality into painting, it's also how to grab reality and represent it in a really personal manner.
